April 3, 2004: Spending is among criticism of Dobelle (Star-Bulletin) ... A critical
essay on Dobelle's presidency -- "Dangerous Equations," by state
Rep. Mark Takai, state Sen. Donna Kim and faculty members Amy Agbayani
and Ralph Moberly -- was also published in the Star-Bulletin in July while
the regents were in the midst of the evaluation. The evaluation reflects
some of the criticisms raised in the essay... July 20,
2003: Let
debate continue between Dobelle and critics. Editorial. Honolulu Star-Bulletin. CRITICS of University of Hawaii President Evan Dobelle and Dobelle himself exchanged strong views about the health of the institution in this section of the Star-Bulletin on the past two Sundays, but the issues raised remain unresolved. Dobelle responded to some but not all of the accusations and welcomed "constructive" criticism. We regard any factual criticism to be constructive. Continued robust debate and documentation is the best method of determining what meets that criterion and what does not. July 20,
2003: Medical
school deals secret. Brannon, Johnny. The Honolulu Advertiser. Work is well under way on the University of Hawai'i's ambitious new medical school complex at Kaka'ako, but many details about how the institution is spending public money are being kept secret. July 18,
2003: DOE,
UH shave cutbacks in budget. Pang, Gordon and Hiller, Jennifer. The Honolulu
Advertiser. Department of Education and University of Hawai'i officials were able to stave off some of the planned budget restrictions imposed by Gov. Linda Lingle's administration at the end of last month, but likely not enough to avoid reductions in services. July 17, 2003: UH-West O'ahu draws concern. Creamer, Beverly. The Honolulu Advertiser. A report
by the commission that accredits universities in the Western region had
general praise for the University of Hawai'i's four-year campuses after
a March review, but had "serious concerns" for current programs
- and the future - of UHiWest O'ahu. July 17,
2003: Public

2003: Is
Dobelle failing to deliver? Pang, Gordon. The Honolulu Advertiser. "Two years into the promise-filled term of University of Hawai'i President Evan Dobelle, the high-energy administrator still has strong support from a loyal segment of the community but a growing and increasingly vocal chorus of critics is beginning to wonder whether he can deliver on the ambitious agenda he set for himself."
"I am immensely proud that with the help of thousands of colleagues and citizens of Hawaii during the past two years, we have changed the course and direction of the University of Hawaii 180 degrees. This enormous organization of 88,000 degree and non-degree students with 11,000 employees at 10 campuses spread throughout our islands, and a budget approaching $1 billion, was in desperate need of direction and leadership."
"The University of Hawaii Board of Regents yesterday terminated a controversial $82,000 contract with the Baltimore firm that designed two UH logos that flopped with the public. Now regents say they plan to replace the contract with Robert Rytter of Baltimore with a more open process that will lead to a new logo for the 10-campus system." "Hawaii graphic designers will get a chance to create a new logo for the University of Hawaii, which excluded them by hiring a mainland firm earlier this year. In yesterday's meeting, the UH Board of Regents unanimously accepted a subcommittee recommendation to choose a local graphics firm or individual to design the logo." "President Evan Dobelle has run UH's finances into the red with huge pay raises and empty promises." June 25, 2003: A case of Dobellian Excess. Shapiro, David. The Honolulu Advertiser. "In an ideal world, the lofty executive pay might be justified. But in the real world of crushing state budget deficits, such unrestrained extravagance is ivory-tower thinking at its worst. It's costing Dobelle valuable standing among the public and key constituencies whose goodwill he needs to succeed in his job." "Gov. Linda Lingle was critical yesterday of the big salaries going to a new group of University of Hawaii administrators. 'From our point of view, it is ridiculous,' Lingle said." June 21,
2003: Regents
give Dobelle team he requested. Apgar, Sally. Honolulu Star-Bulletin. "Capping a two-year effort to restructure the 10 campuses of the University of Hawaii into a unified management system, the UH Board of Regents approved the appointment of two key systemwide positions yesterday." June 21,
2003: Regents
fill out positions in Dobelle's management team. Creamer, Bev. The Honolulu
Advertiser. "The University of Hawai'i Board of Regents took some major actions at its meeting yesterday, putting in place the final members of President Evan Dobelle's management team for the 10-campus system and creating a new endowed chair in Native Hawaiian Health with a three-year $4.7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health." April 6,
2003: It's
time for a closer look at UH. Nolan, Webster. Honolulu Star-Bulletin "Recently renewed pleas from residents in Central and West Oahu for the state to build the long-promised Leeward campus of the University of Hawaii likely will be rejected again because of other strong pressures on the state budget. But this deplorable situation underscores an urgent need for the Legislature and the news media to take a much closer look at the way UH is governed by its board and managed by its executives."
