The Board of Regents fired University of Hawaii President Evan Dobelle “with cause” tonight after a marathon closed-door meeting.

“Sadly, we have come to the realization that the president no longer has our trust, and there is no longer a unity of purpose between the board and the president, or a clear recognition of his integrity, character and commitment,” said Pat Lee, board chairwoman.

She said the vote was unanimous.

David McClain, vice president of academic affairs, becomes the acting president effective immediately.

Lee did not detail the regents’ reasons for firing Dobelle.

Firing Dobelle “with cause” is significant because it signals that the regents do not intend to pay him a more than $2 million severance package.

The regents have attempted to contact Dobelle, but were unsuccessful, Lee said. Once he is formally notified, he will be placed on administrative leave with pay for 30 days.

Ask yourself this: "Is our university better off today than it was two years ago?"

On Sunday, July 6, 2003, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin published "Dangerous Equations" - an exposé by Dr. Amy Agbayani, state Sen. Donna Mercado Kim, Dr. Ralph Moberly and state Rep. K. Mark Takai on the growing credibility gap in University of Hawaii president Evan Dobelle's administration.

Dobelle became president of the UH system on July 1, 2001. As we look back on his two years as president of our university, we don’t see the world-class university that Dobelle claimed he would deliver if we set him free from bureaucratic constraints. We don’t see students better served with campus resources. We don’t see faculty and researchers better nurtured to innovate. And we don’t see our communities enriched by a better town-gown relationship.

We encourage you to read the piece in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. On this Web site, concerned citizens can read the entire piece with references to detailed footnotes with facts and sources.
